| THE PRINGLE DNA PROJECT
 The Pringle (or Hoppringill) surname is one of the oldest in the Scottish borders. It dates to the reign of Alexander III in the mid-13th century. The surname is derived from a round hill in the Parish of Stow.
The Project objective is to determine the Chief of the Clan. The last recorded Chief of the Clan was John Hoppringle of that Ilk and Torsonce who died in 1738 without male heir.
To achieve this objective it will be necessary to trace back the male family branch lines through Y-STR genetic testing to a time well before the death of the last Chief. In the first instance it is proposed to try to go back to Thomas Hoppringill of that Ilk circa 1540. As many male cousins and other male relatives as possible, preferably with documentary records of ancestry, should test in order to establish a broad baseline. The more relatives that are involved, the higher the family tree can be climbed. Another advantage is that the information obtained will form a record for future generations of Pringles.
The main family branches are:
1. Pringles of that Ilk and Torsonce - extinct, from which:2. Pringles of Smailholm - all the remaining Pringles - are derived as follows:(a) Pringles of Whytbank - senior male descendants of Smailholm(b) Pringles of Torwoodlee(c) Pringles of Craigleith - Craiglatch, Newhall and Stichill.

If interested, do please read the tutorials on the web site.  Y-STR DNA testing is not like a police DNA test since it does not identify an individual! We want to test as many male cousins and relatives as possible to create a broad baseline, preferably starting with the eldest for obvious reasons. An important benefit of this Project is that it will leave a record of the male line for our descendents. The family branch (if known) and ancestry documentation would be very helpful to me as the administrator, as would be the active recruitment of members.

The cost of the test (43 markers) is currently $149 and is a special rate under the Advantage Program. Under this program the test kit is sent to you after payment and I recommend sending the swabs (and the consent form) in the envelope provided to USA rather than to UK since it will have to forwarded to USA anyway.
